A Different Kind of Success
For most of
his life, he defined himself by a single, powerful word: duty. It was
his compass, his North Star. He believed his worth was tied to showing up,
shouldering the weight, and ensuring everyone was taken care of - even if it
meant putting himself at the very bottom of the list. That's what we do for
family, right? We sacrifice. We push through.
And for a
long time, that belief was enough.
The
Cracks Begin to Show
Lately,
however, he started to feel the cracks - the kind that form when you run on
empty for too long. His days blurred into a cycle of exhaustion and survival,
leaving him feeling hollow. He kept telling himself, "This is just a
season." But seasons are meant to change, and he realized this one had
stretched on for far too long. The cold winter he was enduring was becoming his
permanent reality. It gave him sleepless nights, kept him locked in his study
until the early hours of the morning, and then returning to his marital bed
warmed by her... But his heart remained cold, and his thoughts spiraled in an
endless loop, making his sleep fitful and troubled.
Other
times, he almost convinced himself that everything was okay, that he could
continue doing this. Hope flickered in his eyes, and he felt a sense of his old
self returning from days gone by when he wore his hair wild, built empires, and
felt the power of the beast coursing through his veins.
But it
never lasted, because he had embroiled himself in a rigid world where he
nodded, smiled, posed, and wore the masks required by his corporation.
Making
the Choice
And so, he
made a choice. He wouldn't be signing his contract. He'd be coming home at the
end of the year.
This
decision wasn't easy. It was a messy mix of guilt, relief, and a kind of
trembling hope he hadn't felt in years. Letting go of a role that defined him
for so long was bittersweet, a farewell to a version of himself he thought he
had to be. But this wasn't about giving up. It was about choosing differently.
The New Chapter
It was
about choosing joy over exhaustion. Choosing presence over performance. It was
about prioritising his mental and emotional health so he could be the kind of
dad and partner his family truly deserved, not just the detached shadow of him
that had been scraping by.
He is
grateful to them for holding him up through the hard days. For loving him even
when he couldn't find the light. For showing him, in a million small ways, that
he is so much more than his work. They have been his constant reminder that his
value isn't in what he does, but in who he is.
Now, he's
ready to step into a new chapter. One where mornings are slower, laughter is
louder, and time with his family is no longer a luxury he has to "fit
in." It’s beautiful because he’s finally choosing them. And for the first
time in a long time, he's choosing himself.
This is a new kind of success. Not the kind that pushes you until you break, but the kind that is gentle enough to heal. He hopes this choice shows them that it’s okay to change course, to redefine your path, and to put your own well-being first. And to do so in the name of love.
